BOSTON — Police were searching for a missing Boston family as they mourn the loss of a 20-month-old child found unresponsive in their bathtub.
Rocco Gaudioso, 20, and his family were walking to pick up dinner at O’Connell’s restaurant in downtown Boston around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when they were met by police officers.
“We were walking from South Station to O’Connell’s at the last minute,” said Gaudioso’s wife, Camila de Nester. “We saw police right there with the lights. They were yelling at us ‘Stop! Stop!’ and the police officer ran up and told us to put our hands up and then arrested my husband.”
The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The Gaudioso family told WBZ they do not know the boy’s identity, but have named him Rocco Gian Gaudioso.
“My first thought was he’s in trouble, because my husband has a criminal record. But what was crazy to me was when he asked my husband, ‘Why did they arrest you?’ and my husband is telling him, ‘I don’t know.’ My husband said he told him, ‘I didn’t do anything,'” said de Nester.
Police said the family was known to them and was supposed to meet up with them at O’Connell’s. Officers said the boy was in the bathtub and unresponsive when officers arrived.
“We think we’re going to have to make decisions soon about what happens next,” said de Nester. “We’re not sure what’s going to happen to us now.”
De Nester says the family had been planning to celebrate Rocco’s birthday Friday.
